Coimbatore : The DMK party will conduct a protest on June 19 in front of the CCMC, demanding regular drinking water supply and resignation of S P Velumani, the Administration Minister. A press meet was conducted this noon by N Karthik, the DMK MLA of Singanallur constituency to notify the press about the protest.

During the press interaction, in response to a media query on "How can Suez be claimed responsible?" for the inadequate supply of water in Coimbatore, the MLA retorted saying, "Well, Suez is responsible for the improper handling of pipelines." The press meet was called by N Karthick to throw light over certain queries related to inadequate water supply that were raised by them to Minister S P Velumani. Since the DMK party felt that they had not got a responsible answer from him, the party plans to organize a peaceful protest on June 19 at 10 am, in front of the Corporation Office in Town Hall.
The DMK also highlighted the problems faced by people due to inadequate supply of drinking water. They demanded for the resignation of S P Velumani and reiterated that a private organisation must not be given responsibility for the water supply in Coimbatore. The other complaints raised included pipelines that were not repaired at regular intervals which caused water leakage in various places adding to the water woes.
The DMK alleged that according to the agreement with the France-based private company, Suez has been given responsibility to supply water for 26 years at a cost of Rs.3150 crores. The DMK claimed that the foreign company failed to provide proper supply of water and also fail to carry out regular maintenance work which causes leakage in pipes. They have also requested the Government to immediately cancel the agreement made with the company.
N Karthik stressed that the DMK party strongly discourages the agreement made with Suez and alleged that Coimbatore Corporation is operating out of sheer ignorance and negligence. He also asked Minister S P Velumani to immediately resign accusing him of being responsible for the acute water shortage in the city.
